After the Jets benched Zach Wilson on Wednesday, the Texans reportedly did the same, sidelining Davis Mills amid the quarterback’s struggles.
Kyle Allen will start under center Sunday against against the Dolphins, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Texans coach Love Smith declined to name a starter in a Wednesday press conference.
“I do not announce who’s starting through the week,” he said. “We have a starting lineup, the last one that we have. When it changes, we’ll let you know.
“But during the week, of course we’re not going to announce anything like that. I think that would give an opponent an advantage. Our starting lineup… is the same one until told otherwise.”
When asked about how Jets coach Robert Saleh announced benching Wilson for Mike White, Smith said: “It doesn’t matter how the Jets do it. What I’m going to say is this is how we do it…We’re not going to publicly talk about all those things.”
Smith was vague when asked if Mills still gives the Texans their best opportunity to win heading into Week 12.
“The guys that are going to play are the guys I think give us the best chance to win to beat Miami,” he said.
Mills did not hold his usual press conference on Wednesday, as the team announced that no quarterback will take the podium until Friday.
Earlier this week, Smith was noncommittal about starting Mills following his worst performance of the season in Sunday’s 23-10 loss to the Commanders.
Mills, who was sacked five times, had two interceptions and a pick-six to start the game. He completed 19-of-33 passes for 169 yards and no touchdowns for a 46.1 passer rating. Mills ranks 30th in QBR and leads the league with 11 interceptions on the season.
A former third-round draft pick, Mills had started every game this season.
