Padres’ Bob Melvin becomes latest to get ejected for arguing ‘worst’ plate call

The San Francisco Giants won their 10th game in a row on Wednesday night but got some help from a controversial call that involved former Yankee and Met Gary Sanchez.

The Giants, who defeated the San Diego Padres 4-2, benefited from an overturned call at home plate in the fifth inning.

Blake Sabol of the Giants appeared to be thrown out sliding into home after a strong throw from Fernando Tatis Jr. on Joc Pederson’s two-out single to right.

Sabol was initially ruled out, but the call was changed following a lengthy review after replay officials called Sanchez for blocking the plate.

After the play was reviewed at MLB headquarters in Manhattan and the call was overturned, Padres manager Bob Melvin went on a tirade.

Melvin shouted at umpire Manny Gonzalez from the dugout after he had announced the call to the Oracle Park crowd.

Gonzalez didn’t shut his mic off and could be heard saying multiple times, “It’s a replay,” before finally tossing the manager out of the game.

Melvin came charging out of the dugout after being tossed to further engage with Gonzalez over the call.

The Giants went on to score two more runs in the inning as they kept their win streak alive.

After the game, Melvin told reporters that the decision at the plate was “One of the worst calls I’ve seen this year,” according to NBC Sports Bay Area.

It was the second night that a play at the plate was overturned and, in turn, infuriated a manager.

On Tuesday, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy called a decision to overturn a call at home “one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen.”

Texas left fielder Travis Jankowski had made a throw to the plate to nail White Sox infielder Elvis Andrus to save the go-ahead run in the eighth inning — until replay officials changed the call.

After the White Sox challenged the play and it was reviewed in New York, it was determined catcher Jonah Heim blocked the plate illegally, so Andrus instead was awarded home.

That call put the White Sox up, 7-6, a lead they would not relinquish.

Bochy was livid with the call and eventually was ejected from the game.

“For that call to be made, I’m dumbfounded,” Bochy said to Bally Sports after the game. “It’s one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. It’s a shame. It’s embarrassing.

“You can’t do that in that situation.”
