‘Trippy’ Australian bridge leaves internet astonished: ‘I’ve had nightmares that start like this’

A picture of an Australian bridge has gone viral on social media – shocking people overseas.

The snap taken by a passenger in a car about to cross the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane was shared to the global Facebook group, “View from YOUR window”.

The picture has confused people across the world, attracting thousands of comments in just days. The photo makes the bridge look warped.

Foreigners have described it as “trippy”, “creepy”, a “glitch” and “witchcraft”.

“I’ve had nightmares that start like this,” wrote one woman.

“Absolutely NOT. This is too much for my driving anxiety,” said another.

“It looks like the aftermath of an earthquake,” pointed out a third.

The Gold Coast woman who got the shot, Wendy Martin, said she was surprised by how the picture looked as well.

She said she was just trying to capture the sunset on her iPhone and caught the strange angle – which she assured was not edited.

Locals rushed to the comments to inform shocked Facebook users that the bridge was not actually that scary or spectacular in person.

Many joked about the toll being the most shocking part of the bridge.

The original bridge was opened in 1986 and a duplicate bridge in 2010.

They are officially known as the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges on the Gateway Motorway.

The bridges stand about 212 feet at the highest point over the Brisbane River.

The Murarrie toll point, located immediately south of the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, charges a regular car $3.43.

“The only anxiety ppl [people] should have over this wee bridge is the price to cross it. Now that’s a nightmare!” said one person.

“It doesn’t look that trippy in real life, the worst thing about this bridge is the cost of the toll,” wrote another.

The “View from YOUR window” Facebook group was created by a woman in South Africa in 2020 during a Covid lockdown.

It was originally intended for her own family and friends and has grown into a global group with 1.5 million members.

“People show their homes whether humble or grand, sometimes with a cuppa in hand or fur-baby close by. I love that,” Marian Viljoen explains in the description of the group.
