Shannon Sharpe: Grizzlies confrontation one of ‘worst moments’ of my life

Shannon Sharpe still regrets his infamous confrontation with the Memphis Grizzlies.

At a Lakers-Grizzlies game in Los Angeles in January 2023, Sharpe got in a shouting match with Ja Morant’s father, Tee, and the two had to be separated by security.

On his Volume podcast “Nightcap” this week, Sharpe revealed that he “blacked out” and called the fracas “one of the worst moments” of his life.

“Honestly, when people say they black out, I believe them,” Sharpe said to co-host Gilbert Arenas, as covered by Awful Announcing.

“I completely forgot I was at the game. I said, ‘If one guy steps over that line, it’s over.’ I hate that I put myself in that situation, but when I say I blacked out, I honestly did. Security took me back in the hallway and they were talking to me. ‘Hey Unc, you good?’ As I’m calming down, I said, ‘Oh man. Man, I messed up.’”

Sharpe continued to take the blame for escalating the situation, which started when he had words with former Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks.

Brooks, who signed with the Rockets this offseason, is known for his trash-talking style.

“It is what it is. I’m wrong,” he said. “I’m deadass. I was wrong. I apologized to the Grizzlies and Dillon Brooks. Honestly, that might have been one of the worst moments of my life. I should have let it go.”

Sharpe, who at the time was co-hosting FS1’s “Undisputed” with Skip Bayless, apologized on the air shortly after the incident.

“It does not matter what Dillon Brooks said or how many times he said it, me being the responsible person, me having the platform that I have, and having so many people look up to me, I was wrong,” Sharpe said last January.

“I should have lowered the temperature in the arena. Instead, I turned the temperature up and I let it get out of hand.”
