Paddleboarder captures eerie feeding frenzy of sea lions, dolphins and pelicans off California coast

A paddleboarder captured a wild — and rather eerie — video of a feeding frenzy involving hundreds of sea animals off the coast of California.

Bill Clements, who goes by @paddlegoat on Instagram, told Storyful that a sudden swarm of pelicans, sea lions and dolphins went into a frenzy while “enjoying the large bait ball of fish below.”

Footage Clements took from an angle above his paddleboard shows the squawking sea birds circling and plunging into the black-blue waters on the ghostly foggy day.

Dolphins can be seen breaching the surface around the small board gobbling up all they can.

The camera angle changes during the clip and shows the mass of birds swirling in an ominous circle in the deep gray sky.

Fortunately, there were no sharks joining in on the feast, which occurred “somewhere in the middle of the ocean between Oxnard and Anacapa Island” — about 11 miles off the coast of Ventura county in southern California’s channel islands.

“The only thing absent from this scene was a humpback!” Clement wrote on Instagram.

“Maybe a little too early in the season? Or maybe they were just late to the party!”
